The events of that time still meant for many Turks and Greeks and trauma are the direct cause of the resentments and conflicts that still exist today between the two peoples, such as the partition of Cyprus. Between 6 and 7 September 1955 a pogrom took place in Istanbul against ethnic minorities, especially hundreds of victims were citizens of Greek origin. In recent years the relations between the two countries have improved. In January 2008, the Greek prime minister, Kostas Karamanlis, announced along with his fellow Turkish Recep Tayyip Erdo'an to encourage cooperation between the two countries. Karamanlis said that Greece supports Turkey's entry into the European Union .
